On Selling the First 100 Copies

Really I never looked much further than the actual act of publication – holding my book in my own hands. Hosting a book launch for a crowd of my friends and family. Maybe doing a few school readings.

I never realized how satisfying it would be to have people actually read my book and talk to me about it. I’ve carried these characters around with me for so long, that it’s very gratifying to have others relate to them and ask me questions about them. It’s very much like the early days of my playwriting and directing.

And people are reading it so FAST! It takes most everyone only a couple of days to finish Power Plays. Which makes me wonder – how will a total stranger react? Someone not from Estevan. Someone who doesn’t know ME.

A friend told me the other day that if I ever meet John Grisham I should tell him that she is his biggest fan. Honestly I don’t see myself ever moving in that circle of writers. I think I’m going to sell a couple of thousand copies of a girls’ hockey book and then pretty much fall off the radar again after a year or two. Or at least until I finish that murder mystery at Sturgis.

And on that note, I may have finally found myself a research assistant, which should help that project take off again. And this person (William Sinclair) is also going to help me with setting up a website to exclusively sell my book. We’ll include live interviews and readings. Should be very fun.

And Henders Drugs in Estevan has agreed to sell my book on consignment. That will make it much easier for people to get their hands on it. I’ll just have to run an ad in the Mercury so the word is out there.

Anyway, my goal is to sell all 3000 copies before Christmas. The time is ripe. Many people are buying them as gifts for nieces and granddaughters.

Should be a fun ride for the next few months.
