Estevan Junior High, a rambling old building built in 1912, was my inspiration for Jessie’s new school. I taught at EJH for 18 years and have many fond memories of that place. EJH closed in 2003, and I am sad to say that it was torn down in 2005.
The character of Kathy Parker is based on one of my daughters’ Xtreme teammates and friends, Kelly J. To know Kelly is to love her! She is absolutely fearless on the ice, and it was a pleasure to watch her play hockey throughout her high school years. Kelly played one year of university hockey but has recently become a globe-trotter.
Shauna Langley is based on a girl who played for the Xtreme’s greatest rivals — the Weyburn midget girls. Jodi was the team captain and an incredibly skilled athlete. The Xtreme girls knew they had to stay on their toes when Jodi was on the ice. I have recently learned that Jodi is now teaching at St. Michael’s Junior High in Weyburn.
Steve Brewer is based on my brother-in-law Allan “Buzz” Fleck, who is a well-known hockey coach in Southeast Saskatchewan. I don’t know anyone personally who has more technical knowledge of the intricacies of the sport. Allan is not a cop, but my husband can attest to the fact that Buzz did a pretty fine job of “policing” the ice “back in the day.”
